Many professionals attending to children don’t recognize emotional and behavioral problems

Most professionals (teachers, managers, nurses, general practitioners, etc.) attending to children have little training in child mental health.  They often understand behavioral problems as educational issues.  This leads to reactive, punitive, control/containment interventions that do not foster positive behavior or improve learning.

Some lecturers use Dominic to show university students what child mental health problems look like in order for the students to be able to recognize them.  Dominic could be similarly used with service providers who are in constant interaction with children.

Child mental health is usually described as a difficult to remember set of highly abstract and theoretical concepts. Dominic pictorial format makes child mental health problems easy to remember.  The illustrated situations stay vividly in the mind, helping recognize child’s symptomatology.
